PROGRAM RATIONALE (please review the Program Guidelines for directions):
This program of studies is designed to prepare myself for work in the field of motivation with elite athletic performers. In addition to the work completed in this program to pursue my research interests in the mind/body connection, I am working toward post-doctoral certification as an Applied Sports Psychologist.
During the primary specialization courses, I am looking build a solid foundation with my knowledge in the field of Educational Psychology. I feel that this is an important building block to establish prior to engaging in research related to this field. I have proposed following the Educational Psychology progression of courses which include foundation classes
as well as research project coursework to pilot some work in my area of interest (EDEP 820-824). In addition, I have added several independent study and internships to this plan in order to progress my knowledge in the field of motivation studies.
My first proposed independent study was during the summer of 2014 (EDUC 897). I was interested in a reading course specific to motivational theory and asked Dr. Martin Ford to work with me on the literature selection and proctoring of the course. My internship would be a mentored experience during the summer of 2015 where I would accumulate 100 hours of experience in an applied setting working with Dr. Leslie Sherlin at the SenseLabs Science Center, studying quantitative EEG as it relates to elite athletic performance and flow (EDUC994). These courses should serve to provide a solid foundation for the “mind” portion of my studies.
My secondary emphasis will be on the “body” with my minor area of studies identified as Research Methods in Human Development. I have completed coursework with a research emphasis in Applied Kinesiology (EFHP 612) and Applied Research Methods in Applied Kinesiology (EFHP 620) that I have transferred into my program of studies. In addition, I have completed advanced courses in qualitative study methods (EDRS 822/824/826) as this is the area that my dissertation is leading. This program of studies will prepare me for dissertation work in the field of sport dyad perceptions of factors leading to flow outcomes – specifically with elite athletes. This is the mind/body connection that is of great interest to me and should promote my possibilities for leadership in this area.
